Designer gouache is an opaque watercolor. It dries quickly but can be reconstituted like watercolor. It is not plastic like acrylic and the paint can be built up to create texture like oils. The quick drying time makes it harder to end up with muddy colors. Because the colors are opaque and one uses white, there is no reserving the whites like in watercolor and it is possible to paint over mistakes. With a minimal kit one can go outside and sketch, or it is fine to use at the kitchen table instead of needing a more dedicated work space like oils or pastels.
Gouache feels like real painting to me and it is a lot of fun without all the set up and mess of other mediums. I love that I can rework it so all is not lost with the first mistake. It is a medium where one can correct mistakes, experiment with color and learn more quickly.
