Using the techniques of the impressionist painters, I will teach a clear and practical method for starting your landscapes in pastel that can be carried to conclusion in any way you wish. We will work to capture the changing light effects of nature. When the weather permits, we will paint plein air. On bad weather days we will paint in the studio either from new photos or finish paintings started outside. The class will include demonstrations and individual critique. Students of all abilities are welcome. There will be plenty of guidance to help you realize your vision in your work.
I have spent many years painting plein air with pastels and oils. Because of their speed, I find pastels to be the best medium for outdoor work. With oils I have to return to the same spot, at the same time and light effect multiple days. With pastels I can usually do a finished piece in 2 to 3 hours. Pastels are good at capturing the wide variety of textures in nature and one can experiment and make immediate changes without muddying the colors.
