Of all the elements that make up a painting, Color is the one that most catches the eye. Color’s effect can be subtle or in your face. Color can communicate a feeling faster than any other element in a painting, and it can change the mood of a painting in an instant. The purpose of this class is to begin learning how color works and how to use color to your advantage so that your paintings have that wow factor. Color that makes people stop and look at your painting, even if they don’t know why and how to use and create color to make it part of your personal expression.

Through instructor demos, hands-on exercises, and PowerPoint presentations, you will learn:

·       The properties of color and how they work together;

·       How to use color schemes to make your colors pop and harmonize;

·       How color and value work together, breaking the tie that binds your reference to your painting, freeing you to make more personal color choices to express your vision.

·       How to mix a wide variety of color, giving you endless choices for self-expression.

**Important** We will be working in acrylic paint, but concepts can be applied to watercolor and oils as well. You do not need to be an acrylic artist to take this course. While some painting experience is ideal, it is not necessary. If you can put paint to paper, you’re good to go! In fact, these concepts can be applied to any other area where color is a factor, including mixed media visual art, interior decorating, landscaping, flower arranging and more.

All materials necessary to participate in class are provided by instructor for a $40 supply fee, payable to Sharon Estes, with the exception of a pad of mixed media paper, 98lb or better, which must be purchased by the student. Recommended size is 11x14 and no smaller than 7x9. **Included in materials fee is access to a private Facebook group** where you can upload work, ask questions, or just share your progress. If you do not have Facebook, you can send your info to me, and I will post it for you.
