In this class, students will create a series of small-scale landscape paintings inspired by their own photographs of South County and surrounding areas. Working in a watercolor journal sized similarly to postcards, we’ll capture the essence of familiar places—beaches, farms, meadows, winding rivers, and local landmarks.
Students will learn how to simplify complex scenes, focus on strong composition, and translate photographic reference into expressive gouache paintings. Emphasis will be placed on color mixing, atmospheric perspective, and creating a sense of place through light, shape, and mark-making. Each week, we’ll explore techniques for building small, cohesive studies that feel complete and intentional. By the end of the session, students will have a collection of painted “postcards” that reflect their personal connection to the local landscape.
This class is suitable for all levels. No prior experience with gouache is necessary. Returning students welcome—new subjects and approaches will be introduced.
A $55 materials fee payable to Susan on the first day of class will cover the cost of all supplies.
