Soft pastels are a medium that have been used for hundreds of years due to their richness of color, convenience for travel or plein air work, and the ability to be used for preliminary drawings or a finished piece that can be completed in a few hours.

This class will introduce you to a selection of the soft pastels available, paper surface choices, techniques, tools to aid in painting, and framing options.
Day 1 We will talk about pastels, papers, tools and how to use them. I will do a short demonstration of a simple still life on a 9 x 12 Uart 400 grit paper on how to begin a painting and build layers of color.
The remaining time will be spent on the class working on their own version of that still life.
Day 2 We will discuss composition and underpainting for a landscape on 9 x 12 400 grit Uart paper. I will have photo references to choose from or you may bring your own photo.
Day 3 Using what we have discussed in day 1 and 2 you will have your choice of subjects, still life or landscape using 12 x 18 Uart paper. Again I will have photo references or you can bring your own.

Each day will end with a friendly critique of our work by the entire group. I encourage students to occasionally take a break, walk around and talk to each other. Sharing our thoughts is a great way to learn from one another.

A $20 supply fee will cover the cost of paper. Please see the materials list for what to bring to class.
