This course is designed for photographers who have mastered their camera settings and are ready to tackle the ethical, technical, and creative challenges of documentary photography. We’ll skip the "how-to-use-a-camera" talk and dive straight into the grit of photojournalism. You’ll learn how to blend into a scene, gain the trust of strangers, and react instantly to fast-moving events. Through hands-on practice and critiques, you’ll learn how to anticipate "the decisive moment," understand how to build a cohesive photo essay, and capture the human condition with authenticity. Students will be encouraged to take pictures and complete small assignments outside of class, in order to get timely and constructive feedback on their work.
The first class will focus on photojournalism literacy and discussion around what makes a strong documentary image. The second and third classes will be focused on taking pictures out of the classroom as a group, with demonstrations and coaching. The fourth class will be a cumulative critique on pictures taken during class time and for homework, with discussion on photo essays.
Course Highlights:
- Ethics & Legal Rights: Understanding your rights as a photographer in the field and navigating the responsibilities of being a visual witness.
- Candid Practice + Environmental Portraiture: Techniques for unobtrusive shooting in public spaces and using surroundings to tell a deeper story about your subject.
- The Narrative Arc: Discussion of what makes an effective documentary image and developing a beginning, middle, and end in a series of images.
- Image Review: Constructive feedback on assignments taken for class
