Take a visual journey to two of Japan’s ancient kiln towns, Shigaraki and Bizen! This photo essay from a March 2026 trip, explores artisan studios, climbing kilns, and a hands-on workshop to make traditional sake cups and matcha bowls. There will also be a display of hand-selected pieces brought back from four talented artisans.
What to Expect: a look at custom tours and artist shops, a journey through centuries of history at historic sites and working climbing kilns, a peek at the impressive new Bizen City Museum of Art, which celebrates Bizen ware and contemporary Japanese ceramics.
About the Speaker: Nessa Richman is a South Kingstown resident and amateur ceramicist.
