Over this 8 week class students will investigate both wheel and handbuilding methods. Half the time will be spent on each. Beginning with the wheel, students will learn how to make one or more molds for the handbuilding portion. The rest of wheel time will be spent learning how to throw functional yet altered forms, with the last wheel project exploring both wheel and handbuilding elements together. The possibilities are endless! Handbuilding time will begin with an investigation of a project (or two) with the molds made (molds will be on hand if needed). Other handbuilding explorations will include functional projects using coils and slabs with the possibility of adding in sculptural elements through pinching or solid building. A variety of surface treatments and glaze techniques will also be considered.
Requirements: This is an intermediate class. Having taken Pottery 1 and feeling comfortable with the centering process is recommended. Bringing an open mind is appreciated. One 25 lb. bag of clay is included ($50 value includes glazes and firings) as well as time to work in the studio outside of class.
