The unique process of Raku merges the potter’s skills with the spontaneity of fire and melted glass. The pieces are heated quickly to 1900 degrees then pulled from the kiln glowing orange. Immediately the glaze crackles with air contact. The pot is then placed into a chamber with a combustible material. As the paper ignites, a lid is closed onto the chamber, smothering the fire. The result is a carbon black body and black crackle throughout the white glaze. Illusive copper red lusters and bright color highlight the pieces. The class is broken up into two parts. First you will be creating pieces to be fired (4 classes/weeks). The second part will be firing pieces created (4 classes/weeks).

Pottery 1 class is required. One 25 lb. bag of clay is included ($45 value includes glazes and firings) as well as time to work in the studio outside of class.
