Feeling adventurous? Do you want to try something new? Or do you have a Holga or Diana camera somewhere collecting dust or in a box just waiting to be used? Would you like to see your images in a square format? This class will introduce you to the concepts of serendipity and intuition through the use of a medium format plastic "toy" camera. This camera will free you from the more technical controls of the cameras you've been using previously, and will introduce you to the element of "play" in photography. Why not try out an easy-to-use, non-techie, plastic film camera? The plastic camera will, for all practical purposes, set you free from f/stops and shutter speeds, since there are only two f/stops (questionable) and one shutter speed on the Holga, the most popular of the plastic cameras. Most importantly, these cameras use film. The film is advanced manually and the camera leaks light, which we will do our best to fix.

What you will need for this class: A Holga 120N camera (don't have one? we have some you can borrow), at least 4 rolls of ISO 400 speed 120 film (b&w - Ilford 120 XP-2 400)(color - Kodak 120 Portra Color Negative 400 or Fuji Pro 400H Color Negative), plenty of patience and a good sense of humor. Students will need the above supplies for the first class. Students will also need to have their film processed with 5X5 proofs at Kerry’s Warwick Photo, Ltd. in Warwick. There will be 4 shooting classes (weeks 1 through 4) and a final class to review all of the pictures taken during the 4 shooting classes. The lab generally processes and proofs within a couple of hours so there should be plenty of time to shoot one roll a week and have it processed before the next class meets.
