Photography is an art form in which the compression of three-dimensional space into a two-dimensional picture plane happens quickly – and often without the intentional care of similar art forms like drawing and painting. The truth is, photography must also consider the rules of composition and their relationship to the elements and principles of design. In addition is the important consideration of how the image will be presented, and how the aesthetic choice of using color or monochrome plays a huge role in the perception and interpretation of content. This course explores the underlying criteria that determine the aesthetic choices photographers must make by examining the role of color, monochrome and the intentional design of our images. Whether your interest in photography is landscape, portraiture, nature, documentary, travel, or street photography, and no matter what your choice of camera is, this course will provide you with the visual tools to make more interesting and meaningful images that express your relationship to subject matter and the successful communication of your intentions. Weekly in-class critiques and slide shows add substance to our discussions. This course is open to anyone, but basic knowledge of camera controls would be expected.
